As we enter an exciting period of expansion, we're embracing new technologies and sustainable practices to meet the growing needs of our region. We work collaboratively across our organisation and with our stakeholders, constantly striving to enhance the quality of service we provide. As we modernise our systems and invest in smarter water grids, we remain focused on delivering the highest standard of service, always with the future in mind.

Our transformation is about more than just infrastructure—it’s about people. Our team of dedicated professionals are united by a shared passion for creating lasting, meaningful outcomes for the communities we serve, and this is reflected in Our Vision, Water for Life, Our Promise - Safe for Life, and Our Values of integrity, respect, care, and courage that shape everything we do.

About Your Opportunity

As the Principal Communication and Engagement Advisor, you will shape the narrative, relationships and social licence for projects within Seqwater’s largest and most complex capital delivery program, operating at the intersection of infrastructure delivery, community expectations and government accountability. You will provide high-level strategic leadership and specialist expertise across multiple high-profile, high-risk projects, ensuring communication and engagement activities actively enable project success. The role oversees complex engagement strategies, manages significant stakeholder interfaces, advises senior leaders, and ensures compliance with government, legislative and organisational requirements, while building trust with customers, communities, regulators and elected representatives.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead strategic communication and engagement for major, complex and high‑risk infrastructure projects, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives, regulatory requirements and approval frameworks.
  • Provide strategic advice to senior and executive leaders, including ministerial and Estimates briefings and insight on emerging political, social and legislative issues.
  • Manage strategically significant stakeholder relationships, including Community Reference Groups, elected representatives and government agencies, navigating politically and socially sensitive issues.
  • Oversee the delivery of communication and engagement activities across multiple projects, including prioritisation, resourcing, budget oversight, performance monitoring and continuous improvement.
  • Provide leadership and capability development, including coaching staff, workforce planning, and leading communication and engagement during incidents and emergencies.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will possess:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in communications, public relations, stakeholder engagement or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) leading strategic communication and engagement for major projects or complex programs in regulated environments.
  • Demonstrated capability in designing and delivering engagement strategies, using research, behavioural insights and data to inform communication planning and decision‑making.
  • Proven people leadership experience, including capability development, managing performance and delivering outcomes across multiple complex work streams.
  • Strong strategic judgement and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret legislation, regulatory frameworks and government processes, and manage political, social and organisational risk.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to operate effectively under pressure and during incidents or emergencies.

This role will be offered on a full-time fixed term contract until 30 March 2027, with an attractive salary package including 12.75% superannuation.

Appointment to this role is subject to the provision of a national police check and may be subject to other medical/character requirements. Please note that people with criminal records are not automatically deemed ineligible. Each application will be considered on its merits.
